Kazi Asma Azmery: Bangladeshi explorer aiming to cover the globe, makes 150th country visit to Ghana

Kazi Asma Azmery, a celebrated Bangladeshi traveller, has reached yet another milestone in her journey to visit every country in the world.

Ghana became the 150th country that Asma Azmery has travelled to, drawing her closer to achieving her goal of circumnavigating the globe.

Asma Azmery's travels began in 2009 when she sold her jewellery to fund her first international trip to Nepal.

Since then, the spirited explorer has visited six continents and over 1500 cities across these countries.

It has been an adventurous undertaking, especially given that she holds a Bangladeshi passport, which she says is one of the weakest in the world for international travel.

Despite challenges in obtaining visas, Asma Azmery has persisted in her global expedition out of a desire to broaden her perspectives.

"I wanted to see how gender inequality manifests in different cultures worldwide," she said in an interview with ModernGhana News at a welcome ceremony held in her honour by the Bangladeshi Community in Ghana at the conference room of ASA Savings and Loans Head Office on Saturday, August 17.

Across Europe, America, and parts of Africa, Asma Azmery has witnessed greater equality between men and women compared to her homeland of Bangladesh.

Ghana made for a fitting country for Asma Azmery's 150th given the warmth of its people and as an English-speaking nation.

"Ghanaians are very wonderful, friendly, and polite," she noted, explaining why she chose Ghana for her 150th country visit.

During her 51-day stay, Azmery aims to immerse herself in the local culture, visiting cities like Tokoradi and Cape Coast.

Reception in Ghana:
As she expected, the explorer was met with a very warm reception since touching down from Ivory Coast in Takoradi on August 5.

A grand welcome event was held at the conference room of ASA Savings and Loans Head Office in Odorkor, Accra on Saturday, August 17 to celebrate her achievement and encourage her to continue as she intends to finish her global exploration by 2026.

Speaking at the event, the CEO of ASA Savings and Loans, who also serves as President of the Bangladeshi community in Ghana, Md. Aourongjeb noted that Azmery’s pursuit is an inspiration for young women to break barriers.

Madame Theresa Osei Tutu, President of Ghana Girls Guild, also praised Azmery’s achievement, calling on Ghanaian young ladies to take inspiration.

“It's an eye-opener getting to know other cultures. It is liberating. So I think that girls, women have been enclosed. So I find that very liberating. I find that very inspiring to have a young lady going out on her own to explore the world and to feel the world and to see the world. And I think that is something that we should do more often,” she noted.

The reception program, moderated by Ms. Zaima Aribah, had in attendance, other dignitaries from the Bangladeshi Community in Ghana including Azad Hossain, General Secretary of the Community, Alamgir Hossen, Organizer and Shah Md Abdul Wahab, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of ASA Savings and Loans.
