Nyindam explains decision to back Agyarko over Boadu in NPP chairmanship race

Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, has dismissed suggestions that his decision not to support John Boadu in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national chairmanship race stems from a past disagreement over his removal from Parliament’s leadership.

Mr Nyindam said his decision was based on his assessment of the kind of leadership he believes the party requires as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

He said he had chosen to support former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko because he considers him capable of coordinating the party and bringing its members together.

“My decision not to support him today is not due to any personal issues. I simply believe the party at this time deserves a leader who can coordinate and unite us for victory in 2028, and that leader is Boakye Agyarko,” he said in a statement.

His comments followed what he described as claims circulating that his opposition to Mr Boadu was connected to his removal from the leadership of Parliament.

Mr Nyindam rejected the allegation, pointing to his record in Parliament and the fact that he lost his seat in the 2020 general election.

He explained that he served as Deputy Majority Whip during the Seventh Parliament for four years but could not have continued in a parliamentary leadership position after losing his seat.

“I lost my election in 2020, so I wonder how I could have continued to serve as a leader in a Parliament to which I was not elected,” he said.

The Kpandai MP also cited his previous support for Mr Boadu as evidence that his current position was not motivated by personal differences.

According to him, he supported Mr Boadu when he contested the position of NPP National Organiser and again when he made his first attempt to become General Secretary.

“I supported John Boadu when he contested for National Organiser and again when he first stood for General Secretary,” Nyindam said.

He therefore urged NPP members and supporters to disregard claims that personal grievances were behind his position in the chairmanship contest.

“I therefore urge you to disregard any such propaganda,” he said.

Mr Nyindam subsequently appealed to members of the NPP to support Mr Agyarko, arguing that his choice would help strengthen unity within the party.

“I also call on all well-meaning members of the NPP to support Hon Boakye Agyarko for a stronger and more united front,” he said.
