Arresting Duncan-Williams too will be a step in the right direction — Socrate Safo on arrest of man for defilement

Ghanaian filmmaker Socrate Safo has called for the arrest of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, founder of the Action Chapel International Ministry, referencing the religious leader's past admissions of criminal activities.

Safo's comments follow the recent arrest of Nana Poku Piesie, a radio presenter from Kumasi-based Sompa FM, who was detained after confessing on air to having had a sexual intercourse with a minor.

Drawing parallel between the two cases, Safo argued that if Piesie's arrest was justified based on his confession of past crimes, then similar action should be taken against Duncan-Williams who also confessed to past crimes.

"Based on the basis for the arrest of the presenter, I think it is understandable if someone advocates for the arrest of Nicholas Duncan Williams, and the person shouldn't be considered wrong," Safo stated in an interview with Peace FM.

He pointed out that Duncan-Williams has publicly admitted to engaging in armed robbery before his conversion to Christianity.

Safo pushes for equality before the law, questioning why someone should face arrest for past confessions while another walks free due to his social status.

"If he is not arrested, then we have not been fair to the presenter. They have all confessed to crimes they committed in the past, why should one be arrested and the other left free?" he argued.

In a viral social media video, the presenter, speaking on air, shared a story about how he defiled a 14-year-old student.

"I started having sex with a girl at the age of 14... Her father was a rich man in Dormaa Ahenkro, she had a body, and I had sex with her from class six until she completed Kumasi Academy," he stated.

The confession by the presenter was roundly condemned by a section of the public on social media, with some celebrities including iconic rapper Sarkodie calling for his arrest.

The barrage of condemnation eventually led to his arrest on July 16, 2024 by the police.
