To address climate change issues, HOPin Academy, a leading hub for entrepreneurial excellence, is set to launch the Climate-Smart Social Entrepreneurship Programme.

This initiative aims to transform agri-food systems toward green and climate-resilient practices among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Northern Ghana.

This two-year project, in collaboration with Bidrag Til Ghana (BTG), a Danish private organization, is funded by the Civil Society in Development (CISU) in Denmark. It aims to harness the potential of the youth through entrepreneurship programs.

Building on the success of the Northern Social Enterprise for Development (NSEfD) project, the new initiative will focus on advocating for better climate practices and equipping MSMEs with the necessary information to integrate climate-smart activities, enhancing their businesses and market competitiveness.

The project will be implemented in ten communities: Saboba, Lamashegu, Kpalsi, Choggu, Nyankpala, Kumbungu, Zogbeli, Savelugu, Gbanyemle, and Tishegu in the Northern Region.

Muniratu Abduallai, a Startup Officer at HOPin, emphasized the importance of youth contributions to entrepreneurship for national growth. Providing them with information, resources, and skills to integrate climate-smart activities into their operations is a priority for the organization.

“This will not only help mitigate the negative consequences of climate change but also enable MSMEs to be aware of current issues, produce according to the season, and use available resources to create job opportunities,” she said.

The program targets three major challenges: climate change, the sustainability of MSMEs, and networking.

To tackle climate change, the project will encourage farmers and MSMEs to adopt ecologically sustainable methods, preventing environmental harm. This approach aims to mitigate the negative consequences of climate change, which affect socio-economic activities and hinder growth in the respective communities.

Integrating climate-smart activities into operations will help reduce costs, improve resource management, and diversify income streams. This will secure the long-term viability of MSMEs and increase their market competitiveness.

Project Manager Samuel Owusu highlighted that the intervention would incorporate several strategic approaches to achieve its goals, prioritizing climate resilience measures to protect MSMEs from adverse climate change effects, ensuring their continued success.

"The program represents a significant step towards a sustainable and resilient future for Northern Ghana," he said. "By empowering MSMEs and fostering a culture of sustainability, we aim to mitigate the impacts of climate change, enhance the viability of local businesses, and contribute to the region's overall economic development."

He added that the intervention would not only help MSMEs adapt to a changing climate but also position them as leaders in promoting environmental sustainability and economic resilience.

Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Awinpoka Josephine mentioned that monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to ensure the project achieves its set goals.
