The Roundtable Dialogue, a social purpose think-tank, has noted that the two dominant political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have mortgaged the country's future to foreign interests.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 17, Dr. Kenneth Ofosu-Barko, Secretary of the Roundtable Dialogue, accused the NPP and NDC of running the country aground and teleguiding Ghana from foreign capitals.
"We have seen this country governed by two political parties, the NPP and the NDC. These two parties have demonstrated that they have no vision for the country but have instead run it aground.
“Our leaders have mortgaged the future of our youth to foreign interests, and our nation has been teleguided from foreign capitals," Dr. Ofosu-Barko said.
He further alleged that the focus of the two parties and the ruling elite has been on enriching themselves, their families and friends rather than nation building.
"The focus of these parties and the ruling elite has been building infrastructure in their stomachs instead of nation-building. They have consistently used the nation's resources to enrich themselves, their families, friends and foreign partners rather than to create a nation that will benefit all of us now and generations yet unborn," Dr. Ofosu-Barko remarked.
The Roundtable Dialogue is calling for the formation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) comprising independent presidential candidates, movements and individuals to provide voters with an alternative to the NPP and NDC in the next elections.
This is aimed at breaking what it calls the "NPP/NDC monopoly, monetisation and corruption of politics."
The group has scheduled talks with various independent stakeholders to form a consensus presidential candidate and constituencies to field one candidate each against the NPP and NDC.
