Why John Dramani Mahama Should Not Debate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

In the political arena, debates are often seen as a platform for candidates to present their policies, engage with their opponents, and convince the electorate of their capabilities. However, the proposed debate between H.E. John Dramani Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia raises significant concerns, primarily centered around the strategic intentions of the ruling party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Firstly, it is crucial to understand the political landscape and the current standings of both candidates. John Dramani Mahama, a former President, has a well-established reputation and a record that speaks for itself. On the other hand, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, is still striving to solidify his political identity and appeal to a broader electorate. The NPP's push for a debate appears to be a calculated move to leverage Mahama's established stature to elevate Bawumia's profile.

The NPP, in this context, can be likened to endoparasitic organisms. By pushing for a debate, they aim to parasitize the public attention and credibility of John Mahama to market their candidate. Essentially, they want to use Mahama's recognition and experience as a platform to validate and promote Bawumia. This strategy not only undermines the essence of a debate, which is to present and scrutinize policies, but also attempts to manipulate public perception through association.

Moreover, John Mahama has already demonstrated his willingness and ability to engage with the media and the public. He has faced the scrutiny of the press and has consistently communicated his vision and policies. In contrast, Dr. Bawumia's media interactions have been relatively limited. Before considering a debate, it is imperative that Bawumia first confronts the media independently, as Mahama has done. This would ensure that any subsequent debate is based on a fair and balanced foundation, where both candidates have equally demonstrated their capability to engage with the electorate.

Debates should not be used as mere marketing tools. They should be a space for genuine policy discussion and comparison. If the NPP is serious about a debate, it should first allow their candidate to build his profile independently, rather than attempting to piggyback on Mahama's established reputation.

In conclusion, H.E. John Dramani Mahama should not engage in a debate with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at this juncture. The NPP's strategy appears to be more about leveraging Mahama's status to boost their own candidate rather than a genuine effort to present their policies to the electorate. Until Dr. Bawumia can independently demonstrate his capability and vision to the public, any debate would be premature and strategically imbalanced.

I agree with you. There is nothing to debate about. Every sensible Ghanaian knows that the economy is in tatters, the free shs that has become the campaign message for Nkwasiafo People Party and I believe it will be the only message for the next 30 years is not being implemented well. How I I wish the new generation can be discerning and vote based on policies not allegiance to a political party.
