The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Nhyiaeso Constituency, Ernest Afayam has told the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) to hold Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia accountable for the collapse of their businesses.
GUTA has been vocal about the negative impact of the cedi's depreciation on their operations, blaming the declining value of the local currency against foreign currencies for their woes.
Currently, the Ghana Cedi has depreciated by over 20% since the beginning of 2024, trading at approximately GHC 14.85 against the US dollar at forex bureaus.
In an interview on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Ernest Afayam criticized Vice President Bawumia for failing to fulfill his promises to shift the country’s economy from taxation to production.
"Is he not the same person who told us he was going to move the economy of Ghana from taxation to production, and what is happening today? In fact, he has proven that he is the worst Vice President ever with all the attributions as the head of the economic team, addressing himself as the 'Economic Messiah' who once told Ghanaians he was going to arrest the dollar and hand over the keys to the IGP," he expressed.
Mr. Afyam further argued that Dr. Bawumia and the NPP government should be ashamed of themselves for destroying Ghana’s economy and leaving citizens in extreme misery and despair.
"So where is the economic management team who were responsible for managing the economic affairs of this country, and why are they not talking about the cedi again with all the big English and lectures they were giving to Ghanaians in opposition?" he questioned.
He added, “Dr. Bawumia and his government have nothing better to offer Ghanaians,” making reference to the country's economic downgrade to junk status and the ongoing economic troubles that are collapsing and burying businesses.
