Media in Africa meet in Ghana

Ghana is set to host the 3rd Africa Media Convention from May 15 to 17, 2024, welcoming delegates from across the continent for discussions centered on "Freedom of Expression, Sustainable Development, and Environmental Crisis."

This significant gathering brings together a diverse array of participants, including media experts, scholars, students, journalists, unions, editors, and representatives from the public and private sectors, alongside collaborating partners from Africa and beyond.

Mr. Albert Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), announced during a press briefing that Ghana had successfully secured the bid to host the convention. The GJA, an affiliate of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), emerged victorious during the Second Africa Media Convention held in Lusaka, Zambia, in May 2023.

In her remarks, Mrs. Fatimatu Abubakar, Minister of Information designate, commended the GJA President for the strides made in their respective organizations. She affirmed Ghana's readiness to host a successful convention, emphasizing the opportunity to showcase the Ghanaian narrative. Mrs. Abubakar urged the Local Organizing Committee to utilize the event to foster dialogue on the future of public media in Africa.

The Africa Media Stakeholders’ Convention serves as a platform for critical reflection on the challenges facing freedom of expression and media freedom on the continent. It also recognizes countries and institutions that champion freedom of expression as enshrined in various African Union human rights instruments. With over 600 delegates expected to attend, the convention promises to be a pivotal moment for African media stakeholders to address pressing issues and advocate for a conducive environment for freedom of expression.
