The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled four members for publicly endorsing an independent presidential candidate ahead of the 2024 elections.
Hopeson Adorye, a one-time NPP parliamentary candidate for Kpong Katamanso; Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former Communications Director of the NPP and Member of Parliament for Adentan; Nana Ohene Ntow, a former NPP General Secretary and Boniface Abubakar Saddique have all had their membership of the NPP revoked.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 20 by the party's General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the four were expelled for breaching key articles of the NPP constitution, which forbid members from supporting candidates other than those selected by the party.
The statement noted that "in spite of their flagrant breach of the Party's Constitution particularly Articles 3(5) (A)(4) and 3(9)(1), the afore-named men still hold themselves out as members of the NPP."
It quoted Article 3(5) (A) (4) which requires members to "abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the Party" and also cited Article 3(9) (1) which automatically strips membership from anyone who "stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the Party, or who joins or declares his or her support for another Political Party, or for an independent candidate."
Though not specified, it is no secret the four members have been lending support to former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen who recently announced his bid for the presidency as an independent candidate after failing to win the NPP primaries which was won by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The NPP as a political party has rules and regulations guiding the conducts of its members, so this is a straight forward decision. I suppose the persons involved are aware of the clause in the code of conduct. Flawing this is deliberate, so the rule must apply.
