Residents of the North Dawhenya Electoral Area in the Greater Accra Region are alarmed as some communities have been invaded by insects suspected to be black flies.
The presence of these flies has caused anxiety and discomfort among the affected residents.
Reports indicate that the black flies have been leaving blood stains at the same spots they bite, resulting in itching and swelling.
The areas primarily affected by this invasion include Abbeykope, Miotso, Eagle Nest Estates, Mackweon Estates, and several others.
Moses Nii-P Kutor, the Assembly member for the North Dawhenya Electoral Area, expressed his concern over the situation.
Addressing the media on Monday, July, 24, 2023, he reported, “the flies' stings are believed to be poisonous and have caused sores and skin diseases among the residents.”
According to him, the severity of the situation has prompted him to inform the District Health Directorate and the Environmental Health Office, urging them to intervene urgently.
“The situation has become particularly distressing for the children in the community, especially those attending school, as they continuously complain about the painful bites and skin irritation,” he said.
Meanwhile, the District Health Directorate of the Ningo Prampram District has confirmed the presence of the insects in the community.
The District is currently investigating the issue and working closely with the Environmental Health Office to develop strategies to address the problem.
Among the measures being considered is the fumigation of the affected communities to control the black fly population and minimize the health risks posed to residents.
