The ruling New Patriotic Party has said it views its defeat in the Assin North by-election held on Tuesday, 27 June 2023, as a "wake-up call, prompting us to evaluate our approach, make rational retrospective assessments, and conduct a thorough analysis".
Mr. James Gyakye Quayson of the main opposition National Democratic Congress, polled 17,245 votes representing 57.56 per cent of the total valid votes.
He beat his archrival Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who polled 12,630 votes representing 42.15 per cent of the total votes.
A third candidate, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), polled 87 votes (0.29%).
In a post-by-election statement, the NPP urged its "dedicated party supporters to submit their comments and recommendations to the national secretariat of the party for consideration and possible implementation".
"While we had diligently worked towards reclaiming the Assin North seat, we respect the decision and judgment of the people of the Assin North constituency", the NPP said.
The party also congratulated the NDC on its victory.
"The party extends its warmest congratulations to the National Democratic Congress and the Member of Parliament-elect for the Assin North Constituency on their electoral victory', said the statement.
