UHAS Built Halls of Residence from own funding sources

Feature Article UHAS Built Halls of Residence from own funding sources
MAY 29, 2023 LISTEN

The two Halls of Residence belonging to the University of Health & Allied Sciences (UHAS) were financed by the University.

This is contrary to claims that the two Halls of Residence had been built by the Nana Akufo Addo-led NPP Government.

These two Halls of Residence are Asogli and the newly commissioned 680-bed Sokode.

The Asogli Hall is named as such because the land on which the Hall is situated together with many other facilities belongs to the people of Asogli. The four blocks of the Hall are named Bankoe, Ahoe, Heve, and Hliha, representing divisions of the Asogli traditional state.

The other, Sokode Hall built from an arranged GCB Bank loan facility and to be repaid obviously from the school’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF) is located at the permanent campus, a land originally owned by the people of Sokode. The four blocks of the Hall here are named Lokoe, Etoe, Gborgame, and Gbagble, representing the towns of the area (click here to watch video).

The University has 703 acres of land at its permanent campus at Sokode and as of June 2022 had a student population of 7,688 and a staff strength of 611.

The University also currently has 5 campuses, namely; Trafalgar, Dave, Sokode, Hohoe, and Woawoara.

The University is only a decade in existence but making remarkable strides.

It is however important to note that the University is a fulfillment of a campaign promise by Prof John Evans Atta Mills/John Mahama led NDC to the people of Volta region during the 2008 elections to establish a Public University in the region in an event the NDC wins the 2008 general elections.

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) placed first in Ghana in the Times Higher Education's (THE) Impact Rankings 2022, in the SDG-3 category.

The University gained a percentage range of 73.9% - 79.6% with a point range of 102 - 200 to attain this feat.

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) also placed 3rd position among 62 Universities in Ghana on the just-released AD Scientific Index’s ‘Top Universities in Ghana 2022’ ranking.

The Founding Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Fred Newton Binka, placed 1st out of 27 Scientists in UHAS on the ‘Best Scientist in University’ ranking; 2nd out of 979 in Ghana; and 105th out of 23,919 in Africa. He came in at number 1 out of 9 in Ghana, 6 out of 391 in Africa, and 422 out of 4627 in the World on the ‘Epidemiology and Public Health’ ranking.

It is definitely the University to watch.
Regarding the immense benefit that UHAS had brought and keeps bringing to Ho, Volta region, and indeed the entire country, it is a whole story for another day.
