
Congo defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the final of African Youth Championship Congo 2007 to lift the trophy for the first time.
It was the climax of a two-week event which started on january 20 with eight countries divided into two groups. They are Congo, Gambia, Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire in group A. In group B are Nigeria, Egypt, Zambia and Cameroon.
The top two teams from each group qualified for the semi-finals. Gambia and Congo from group A, and Zambia and Nigeria from group B.
In the semi finals, Nigeria beat Gambia 1-0 and Congo defeated Zambia 1-0.
The semi- final results set up an epic final between host Congo and defending champions Nigeria. At the end of 90 minutes of action, Congo dethroned Nigeria by 1-0.
In the third place match decided on 2 February at Brazzaville, Zambia defeated Gambia 1-0 to win the bronze.
The four semi-finalists of the Championship will represent Africa in the FIFA World Youth Championship Canada 2007. They are Gambia, Zambia, Nigeria and Congo.
