Flagbearer hopeful for National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has asked the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to ensure a free and fair election in the 2024 general elections.
According to him, the NPP have appointed their members to the Electoral Commission (EC) as Commissioners.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, 20th March swore in three new members of the Electoral Commission (EC) governing board.
They included Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng Salima, Ahmed Tijani, and Dr. Peter Appiahene.
Their appointment is in line with Article 43 (1 and 2) of the 1992 constitution which states that “there shall be an Electoral Commission which shall consist of a Chairman, two Deputy Chairmen, and four other members.
Addressing party supporters in the Greater Accra region, the former President who believes the commissioners are NPP sympathizers said the move by the NPP government is a ploy to rig the upcoming elections.
"This election is a critical one for us, it's a do-or-die affair for us and we are not going to leave any stone unturned to win this election. We don't want to cheat and we don't want anybody to cheat on us," Mr Mahama.
He said NDC remains committed with the intention of going into the elections with its own referees to block any form of cheating by the NPP.
"Like I said, we are going to be like Azumah Nelson, we are going to take our referee into the ring... When we knock them down there is no referee who will come and say that we didn't win the election," he added.
