Liberty sink Lions and move up to third position

Accra, Nov. 4, GNA - Jonathan Quartey's last six minute deflected strike against Kpando Heart of Lions leapfrogged Dansoman-based Liberty Professionals to the third spot of the Zone "B" of the Ghana Telecom sponsored Premier League in a five-goal thriller at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday.
Liberty are on 14 points six less than Lions who occupy the second position also five points adrift of leaders Hearts of Oak. The Lions from Kpando twice came from behind to level courtesy Sam Yeboah's great finish but it could not stop the Dansoman boys from scoring the match winner with just six minutes to end.
The visitors had to survive a last quarter bombardment from the swift Liberty attackers inspired by the second half introduction of Felix Baffoe whose inch pass was slotted in by Odartey Lamptey for Liberty's second in the 55th minute.
Lamptey on the stroke of half time gave Liberty a sweetener from a rebound shot but Sam Yeboah proved why he is still the leading goal scorer in the 50th and 79th minutes as he came up with two poacher's strikes to put the two teams at par. Yeboah thus, took his goal tally to eight from 10 matches.
The day, however, belonged to Lions' goalkeeper Abdul Ganiwu who stood between Liberty and a goal harvest especially in the first half as he rose to thwart lots of goal-bound shots.
Twice he dived to parry skipper Mustapha Essuman's volley in the 19th and 29th minutes and Quartey's 40th minute chance.
Liberty's Obeng Darko also blew a 25th-minute great opportunity when instead of firing at goal he decided to rather clear the ball off the opponent's goal area to the chagrin of the sparse crowd. The closest the Kpando boys came in the first half was in the 44th minute when Yeboah flew the ball off target from a close range.
