Consistency Of The VGMA'S Means There Is A Future For Ghana's Music Industry

Consistency Of The VGMAS Means There Is A Future For Ghanas Music Industry

The 22nd edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards(VGMA's) was clad in exquisite fashion and style to celebrate Ghana's most biggest music night. Consistently for the past 22years the VGMA'S have upheld Ghanaian artists by celebrating them with well deserved awards and honours. This show of music has stabilized the music industry in Ghana by keeping artists on their toes and making them more competitive and hardworking knowing that their hard work and toil will be rewarded.

Music does not only provide entertainment or inspiration but also drives economies by providing revenue. And so the VGMA'S being there to keep Ghanaian music on its toes is a huge offering. Musicians have always been putting much effort in the task of uplifting Ghanaian music, but sadly government has not done enough to support the industry. Not going far by providing a simple reference, the United States Of America earns over US$400 billion from music every year. The consistency of this award show has kept the soul of the music industry alive and breathing. Although it has had its fair share of criticisms, the VGMA'S have provided a platform for many artists to showcase their talents beautifully and more creatively. If I know I would get an award and be honoured as a big artist in Ghana when I work hard, then I wouldn't sleep on the job right? That is the kind of fire, the VGMA'S have lighted in the music industry.

Music has really put Ghana out there because internationally these artists are really trying their best to to make grab success and have surely done it by getting their songs played overseas and getting collaborations as well. The VGMA'S gave them the zeal and the power to go further and do extra, a win or nomination at the VGMA'S meant a victory for that particular artist because they believe if they've been able to do it in Ghana, they can do it everywhere.

Although the VGMA'S have done enough, it can do more if the needed support from government is provided. Music is a great avenue for revenue which will serve this country in an awesome and better way when catered well for.

Past and present governments have always ignored the creative art sector ignoring its existence. It's time the government starts paying attention to the sector as it has provided jobs for many Ghanaians. Some people who had no chance of making a mark in life because of low level of education and other constraints have made it to the top because of the creative arts industry. They were able to pursue their talents and are now making it big.

If we put caution to the wind by ignoring the sector, it will ware off and then go down, which will also mean an end to Ghana. I ask was it the government who contributed to the success of the Year of Return or the creative industry. Government, I know has tried to do something for the sector, but that is surely not enough because the industry right now although has done its best to keep strong and healthy has rather lost its ground. The movie industry for instance is dead if not dieing on the account of little or no support.

Enough is enough is the only angry tone I can use for now and so I'm calling on the government to start upholding Ghanaian music and creative arts sector in general by giving them the needed support because a win for Ghana's music industry means a win for us all.
