Men Are Used Against Men

Men Are Used Against Men
14.06.2021 LISTEN

There are 2 groups of people in the world; males and females. It is almost accepted among all ages and race that females are more vulnerable and therefore the need to be protected by all. Over the years, several laws have been enacted in the interest of women. Universities who admit more females see it as an achievement. There are several scholarship schemes implemented for only females at different levels and fields. It is not surprising that a man by name Kwegyir Aggrey will say, 'if you educate a man, you educate an individual but if you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation'. Yet we expect that the education of an individual should be funded by the man.

The knowledge a woman acquires is easily passed on to the next generation. The early days of every child is usually spent with the mother and therefore there is always a natural affection and a strong bond between them. This makes the children easily believe whatever they are told by their mothers. Have we taken out time to access the kind of information that is passed on? Some women are quick to bring to the notice of their children how daddy's work is always keeping him busy causing him to have limited time for the family yet these same people fail to explain to the kids how that business sustains them financially.

The financial burden to keep the family going rests on the man. Whenever he is unable to provide, he is reminded to be a man and even in some cases compared to other people. Of course, the man should be able to provide but he should be regarded as the head of the family not only in matters relating to finance. Our fathers did not explain to us what they went through to give us the best education we had and so we could not appreciate their efforts.

The efforts of our fathers remained as the foundation of a complete building. It cannot be seen yet it is the reason we are capable of standing strong. I remember clearly requesting an amount of money from my dad. It was quite huge at the time so he told me to give him some time. I insisted vehemently that I needed it on that same day. My father asked me to wait for him. He went outside and within some few minutes, the amount I requested for was given to me on his arrival.

My dad became the hero of the day. I left the house with excitement. Over the years as I grew up and understood some realities of life, the effort of my father could now be more appreciated. But guess what! If he had the money why did I have to talk for several minutes? Why did he go outside as though he was going to look for someone? It was later I realized he had to borrow just to make me happy even though I didn't put forth my request on time.

To be a man is in itself workdone. The head should always be ready to sacrifice for other parts of the body. That's why there is an Akan adage that says, 'as long as the head remains on the body, it does not stop carrying loads'. There is nothing wrong with appreciating our mothers for the good they do. They shall always be remembered for the many sacrifices made. However, our fathers are also worth celebrating while they are alive.

During fathers day, that is when some women remind their children of how badly their father treated them. For this reason, some young men do not see anything good done for them by their fathers let alone to appreciate them. What we need to remember is that if not now, we will surely be fathers soon. What will be said of us? No matter the pain, let us not fight ourselves. Let us not be overcome with evil but rather let us overcome evil with good. Let's celebrate the good in our fathers. Just as every child is your child, every man can be a father. Let's share the love. It is possible!
