Above the Law?

Above the Law?
08.06.2021 LISTEN

Each institution, organization, or group of people usually follows established rules and regulations to ensure peace, order, and stability. In terms of countries, the framework of these rules and standards is what we call law. Laws usually check behavior and spells out accompanying consequences when anyone within its domain flouts it.

The consequences are enforced in the spirit and the letter of the law. However, it should be emphatically stated that equality before the law is key to upholding the integrity of the bodies mandated to enforce these laws. It is only in developing countries that actions and precedents regard some people within the ruling government and other stakeholders as above the laws of the Republic. Some even make daring statements in public to suggest that they will always have their way no matter what the citizens say. How sad! These sets of hypocrites keep rising on the wings of 'scratch my back, and I will scratch yours.

There is nothing wrong with helping others and desiring to be helped by them, but the motives should be founded on sound principles. Why should some people be sacrificed for the wrongs of the so-called big shots? Is it not written in our laws that crimes committed do not expire no matter how long it takes and that the offenders are punishable by the law? If this is true, is it right for some people to be singled out and punished for an act that other people believed to know much more about the law commits and gets away? It is evident that selective justice brings about inconsistencies in the application of the law, and most often than not, the ordinary citizen is disadvantaged.

It appears citizens within developing countries are only recognized months before the elections and sidelined after the election processes. The ordinary citizens suffer for the wrongs of the people they voted for to be in office. Indeed, this is not justice! In the olden days, our forefathers were colonized by foreigners. Yet, in this current dispensation, it appears ordinary citizens are colonized by the people who claim to serve them.

We are made to believe that to lead is to serve. Little did we know that these leaders will magnify themselves above the law. The youth keeps watching. They might forget what they are told yet will never forget what they see.

What do they see?

Politicians receive vast sums of money as a judgment debt. Still, they determine when to repay even after the court orders the state to receive it. Politicians organize rallies with no adherence to any safety protocols and even come out with data to defend the action without even showing remorse or apologizing to the citizens. The ordinary citizens organize a program, and they are dragged to the law. Hehehe! Africans are indeed unique creations from God. Key stakeholders such as law enforcement agencies manage a wedding ceremony without adherence to the covid 19 safety protocols. Yet, the focus of discussion happens to be how glamorous the wedding was as they adorned themselves in their most cherished security apparel. Funeral ceremonies are organised with thousands of people in attendance paying no heed to the safety protocols and yet no one accepts the responsibility.

What message are we sending to the next generation? To be a politician or join any of the security forces and be above the law? Are they indeed above the law? It is expedient that the law enforcement agencies help fix this before the youth try to fix it in their way. Today this person, who else might be the next to suffer any form of injustice tomorrow. Right now is not the time to coil into our shelves but to rise against oppressors' rule. No one is above the law by nature! Let our voices be heard in one language. Freedom and Justice! It is possible.
