The Ghana Revenue Authority has replaced the Tax Identification Number (TIN) system with the National Identification Numbers (Ghana Card PIN) effective today, April 1, 2021.

A joint statement issued by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), National Identification Authority (NIA), and the Registrar Generals Department (RGD) said “the change is in line with Government’s policy on the use of a unique identifier for all transactions where the identification of an individual is required.”

The move comes to enable the GRA to expand the tax net from three to sixteen million and shore government revenue generation.

It is also to enable Ghanaians to register their businesses and file their tax returns with ease.

Modalities

According to the statement, NIA officials have been stationed at 16 GRA/RGD offices to register persons without Ghana Card and subsequently at 63 GRA offices across the country.

It added both Ghana Card PIN and TIN will be used simultaneously until the end of the year 2021 for a successful role out of the initiative.

“There will be a transition period from April 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021, where both the TIN and Ghana Card PIN may be used simultaneously as the unique number for tax identification purposes. After this period, it is expected that all existing TINS will be replaced with the Ghana Card PIN.

“A Self-Service portal has been made available on the GRA website ( www.gra.gov.gh ) for existing taxpayers who have registered and have been issued with Ghana card to link their Ghana card PIN to their TIN,” the statement added.
