In a contest best described as a David verse Goliath battle, the veteran politician and former Volta Regional Minister came out victorious in a very narrow escape haven polled a little over 490 votes to outdo her main contender Justice Amankwah Mensah popularly known as JAM 1.
The Krachi West parliamentary seat has always been won by the National Democratic Congress since 1992 with cheeky ease. In the year 2020 however, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) with unlimited state resources at their disposal marshaled every weapon in their arsenal to annex the seat from the NDC. The NPP adopted a number of campaign strategies centered first of all on fabricating lies aimed at denting the credibility of their contender who doubles as the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Helen Adjoa Ntoso. One of such lies was the fact that she was not a native of Krachi and so did not want to see the progress of Krachi. She was accused of not helping the town in its bid to be named the capital of the newly created Oti Region. It was even alleged that she has put up her house for sale in readiness to leave the town.
Then there was the tribal campaign against her and the use of personalities in Konkoba communities to target and brainwash their compatriots into thinking the NPP had their interest at heart.
In addition to this was the influx of top NPP officials into the district to campaign against her. In the last 3 months, Krachi West saw visits be Dr. Bawumia, his wife Samira, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, Roads Minister Kwesi Amoako Atta, Majority whip Mathew Nindam, Director of Danquah Institute Richard Ahiagba, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Akufo and Nana Ohene Ntow are among the top brass of the NPP to storm the Krachi West Constituency to help claim the seat for the NPP.
Millions of Ghana Cedi was invested in the campaign. This bring me to the third campaign strategy adopted by the NPP—vote buying. Even on Election Day, money was shared at a number of polling stations in exchange for votes.
Despite all these seeming insurmountable challenges, Hon. Adjoa Ntoso in a relentless fashion took the campaign by storm. She visited every nook and cranny with her visible good works doing the talking on her behalf.
When the contest came to an end and counting was done, she was declared winner after with 12068 votes over 11572 her opponents ganered ushering her into er 3rd term in Parliament. Her victory did not go down well with her opponents who till today have refused to concede defeat talk less of congratulate her. But the good people of Krachi West have proven that they are not for sale and they deserve commendations.
