A Mind of Your Own

Several years ago, when I was 5 years old, my parents had a visitor who gave me a gift of 50,000.00 cedis in cash which is equivalent to now 5.00 Ghana cedis. What I didn't understand then was the fact that the said amount was handed over to my parents even though it was a gift to me.

With the passage of time as I understood some basic principles of life, I asked my father this question. Why was a gift meant for me given to them on my behalf and not handed to me personally? He replied, "it was because you didn't have a mind of your own." How sad yet very true!

This is not different from what we see currently in Ghana and in most parts of Africa. Several years ago, most African countries were colonized and their people were kept in bondage and laboured tirelessly as slaves. They were commanded and their voices were never heard. Africa had no mind of its own.

With the passage of time, the continued struggle of well-meaning Africans paid off when their freedom was restored through the toil of their blood. Freedom at last! It became behoved on the African leaders to see to the welfare of their citizens yet it appears most African countries can cope with slavery more than their ability to handle freedom.

Freedom is a responsibility and to be responsible is to be accountable. The collective effort of every citizen is essential in the development of each nation or country. However, to ensure maximum cooperation, order, and speed in development, several systems have been put in place to man the affairs of the nation. A simple yet vital question to ask is, "do these institutions and systems have a mind of their own?" Certainly not! It's obvious these institutions work to please either their masters or their personal interest and not that of the nations they've been tasked to work for. Should the citizens continue to remain silent as though they're helpless?

It is time to rise up from the slumber and resist oppressors' rule. The institutions must work. Our systems should be functioning and our leaders should be forced by every available legal and moral means to think and act in the interest of the citizens. We will not rest until we have a mind of our own. It is possible!
