France records nearly 16,000 single-day spike of new coronavirus cases
France on Friday reported 15, 797 new cases of the coronavirus in 24 hours. It was slightly less than the previous day's record of over 16,000 infections but serious enough to prompt health officials to confirm an upward trend in Covid-19 and could add weight to calls for stricter measures.
Fifty-six people died of Covid-19 in a single day in France on Friday, four more than the day before.

Covid-19: Mathematical model shows second wave likely to last until January
A new mathematical model developed by researchers from France and Italy suggests that the second wave of Covid-19 infections in Europe is likely to last until the January of next year.
Giacomo Cacciapaglia, who along with Corentin Cot and Francesco Sannino, told RFI that the predicted time-evolution of the second wave of the European COVID-19 pandemic could help authorities prepare and implement effective measures.

France records highest ever number of Covid-19 infections
France's latest figures show that 16,096 people have been infected with the coronavirus over the last 24 hours, an increase of 3,024 cases. The number is the highest ever in France since the start of the pandemic. The death toll rose to 52, from 43 the previous day.
According to the website of the French health authorities, updated every evening, 6,5 percent of people tested were positive. This rate has been growing steadily over the past few days, from 4,1.

EU urges member states to boost anti-Covid measures to prevent second wave
The European Commission's health spokeswoman has called on EU members states to communicate better and enforce social distancing and hygiene rules to halt a new wave of coronavirus infections. The appeal comes as several countries, including France and Spain, announced tougher restrictions to curb the Covid-19 spread.
"In some member states, the situation is now even worse than during the peak in March. This is a real cause for concern," EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides said on Thursday.

Furious French cities demand rethink of new Covid-19 restrictions
Authorities in Marseille have called on the French government to suspend “shocking” new sanitary measures that will force the closure of bars and restaurants in “maximum alert” zones including the Aix-Marseille area and Guadeloupe.

France bans parties in Paris, other big cities, under tough new anti-Covid rules
Gatherings of more than 10 people will be banned and bars made to close early in Paris and eight other major cities from Saturday, as France introduces a new alert system to stem an end-of summer surge of coronavirus infections.
Health Minister Olivier Véran announced the measures Wednesday in his weekly press conference, warning: "If we don't take action quickly, we risk reaching critical thresholds in some regions.”
