Dear Auntie Betty,
I am 18 and in senior high school. I am worried about my pronunciation and because of that I feel uncomfortable anytime I’m asked to read a passage in class.
The reason is that in my school if you make a mistake, the whole class will laugh at you and make sure you become sad. They forget that we are in school to study.
Is there a book which teaches how words are pronounced so l can use it to improve on myself?
I also want to be a TV presenter and know it has to do with reading and pronunciation so please help me.
Alberta,
Koforidua.
Dear Alberta,
Get a copy of a concise dictionary with which you can learn the correct pronunciation of words and also their meanings.
First of all, you need to learn how each alphabet sounds so that when you meet such alphabets put together to form words, you will know how they are pronounced.
When you get equipped with the sounds of the various alphabets, it will be easier for you to learn the correct pronunciation of words.
This will also guide you to learn about the origin of words, whether they are nouns or verbs, and that will also inform you on how they are pronounced. You can also learn how they are used in sentences.
The dictionary can be used as a reference book at all times. You can also consult your English teacher to guide you to learn the correct pronunciation of words and I believe he/she can also recommend an English book which will be of help to you at your level.
