Ghanaian musician Captain Planet, of the former music group 4X4, has welcomed plans to revive Ghana Airways, expressing excitement about the possible return of the country’s former national carrier.
The musician recalled flying with the airline during his first trip to the United States in 2004, describing the experience as a smooth one.
In a social media post on Monday, October 26, he said the planned revival brought back memories of his experience with the airline and expressed optimism about its return.
“My First Time In America 2004 I Flew Ghana Airways And It Was A Smooth Flight. I’m Happy Ghana Airways Is Coming Back,” he wrote.
His comments come after Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that the government was targeting 2027 for Ghana Airways to return to the skies.
Okudzeto Ablakwa made the announcement during an engagement with members of the Ghanaian community in Ottawa, Canada, on Sunday, October 25, explaining that a technical committee established by President John Dramani Mahama had submitted its report on the proposed revival.
He also disclosed that President Mahama had held discussions with executives of American aircraft manufacturer Boeing as part of efforts to bring back the airline.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, a direct route between Ghana and Canada, including Toronto, is among the routes being considered as a priority for the revived carrier.
Ghana Airways ceased operations in July 2004 following years of financial losses, mounting debts and operational difficulties.
The government subsequently pursued plans to establish a replacement carrier, Ghana International Airlines, which began operations in 2005 but ceased operations in 2010.
