Two of Ghana's best-known film figures have used the same radio platform in the same week to ask Ghanaians a hard question: why do we celebrate everyone’s films except our own?
Actress and producer Yvonne Okoro, speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, said Ghanaian filmmakers are doing their best to survive while audiences often hunt for faults instead of buying tickets. According to MyJoyOnline, she said audiences will enjoy weak films from other countries yet criticise similar work made by their own people. Her blunt verdict was: “We do not support our own.” She said Hollywood films that are plainly poor still get applause, and Nigerian YouTube productions are often hailed as fantastic. When a Ghanaian film falls short, she said, the verdict is that Ghanaians cannot make good movies. She added that even when Ghanaians make good films, some viewers later claim they never knew the film existed, despite months of marketing.
Her remarks followed those of veteran director and producer Shirley Frimpong-Manso, who spoke on Showbiz A-Z on October 24, 2026. As reported by GhanaWeb, she said she was unimpressed with the YouTube views her films attract compared with Nigerian productions. The host noted that For Love and Country had recorded about 554,000 views a year after release. Shirley said Ghana could have done much better. She said some Nigerian productions reach between five and fifteen million views in a week, describing those numbers as “crazy.”
Shirley acknowledged that Nigeria is far bigger than Ghana, so population alone cannot explain the gap. She said she and her colleagues have worked, premiered films and done business in Nigeria, and that the industry there is no bed of roses. Still, she said, the support Nigerians give their online content is visible immediately. Her sharpest point was about the contradiction at home: people keep asking where the Ghanaian movies are, yet do not show up to support the ones that are made.
This is not a new theme for her. In a 2025 Hitz FM interview reported by 3News, she insisted Ghana’s film industry is not dead, arguing that Nigerians deliberately invested in film through funding and cinemas.
The timing is pointed. Shirley’s new comedy, Agency for the Dead, opens in Ghanaian cinemas on Friday, October 30, 2026, including Silverbird Cinemas in Accra. According to MyJoyOnline, the film draws on Ghanaian folklore and childhood ghost stories for a comic take on supernatural beliefs. At the media premiere on October 20, Shirley described it as perhaps the purest comedy her team has made, saying she simply wanted people to laugh. She told GhanaWeb she deliberately cast actors with a natural gift for comedy, and that the film runs close to an hour and 45 minutes.
The cast includes Yvonne Okoro, Joselyn Dumas, Anita Erskine, David Dontoh, George Quaye, Mawuli Gavor, Omari Dwamena and Rhoda Ampene. Yvonne told GhanaWeb at a special screening that she was initially hesitant because she was in school preparing for exams, but that “you can’t say no to Shirley,” and she committed as soon as she read the script.
My take
I say this as someone who loves Ghanaian movies with my whole heart: Yvonne and Shirley are right, and I stand with them fully. Every time we share a Hollywood trailer within minutes but ignore a Ghanaian poster, we starve our own storytellers. Ghanaian film can only grow if we buy the cinema ticket, watch the YouTube film to the end, share it, and review it. Criticism is welcome, but it should come from people who showed up.
Our industry also needs fresh blood. Let us make room for new, talented actors, writers, directors and crew, and let established names keep mentoring them. The talent is here. What we need now is an audience that backs it.
So this weekend, take your family, your friends and your church members to see Agency for the Dead. Laugh, and let the box office tell our filmmakers that Ghanaians support their own.
