Communications Minister Sam George says DStv subscribers who previously paid about Ghc875 for the sports package will now save more than Ghc500 a month following the latest price reduction to Ghc250.
He said the reduction, from about Ghc875 to Ghc563 and now Ghc250, represents a cut of more than 60% for subscribers who previously paid the higher amount.
Speaking on the price reductions agreed with MultiChoice and Canal+, Sam George said the government’s engagement with the company had focused on making content more affordable for Ghanaian households.
“For us, when we began this journey with MultiChoice and Canal+, the question had been very simple. How do we put content in the hands or in the homes of Ghanaian families at a price that is affordable?” he said.
“The consumer, the Ghanaian consumer, is our ultimate interest,” he added.
The minister said the latest reduction addressed concerns raised over the previous price adjustment, particularly whether subscribers were seeing an actual reduction in the amount they paid.
“For those who had an issue with the way we announced the previous reduction and said that the value did not result in cash, this time that’s been fixed. This time it’s clear,” he said.
Sam George expressed appreciation to MultiChoice and Canal+ for working with the ministry to achieve the latest price adjustment.
“We must extend our sincere thanks to Canal+ for working with us to arrive at this point,” he said.
