Ghanaian actor Joseph Van Vicker has explained that his decision to pursue a GH¢10 million defamation suit against fellow actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, is driven by his desire to protect his reputation.
In a social media post on Thursday, October 15, Van Vicker noted that freedom of expression does not provide a shield for defamation.
“Defamation is not freedom of expression, and accountability cannot be wished away,” Van Vicker wrote.
Reaffirming his position, Van Vicker said he would allow the legal process to take its course.
“My reputation matters, and I stand by the pursuit of justice,” he stated.
The suit, filed at the High Court in Accra on October 10, concerns statements Lil Win allegedly made about Van Vicker in a video published on social media.
According to the statement of claim, the video allegedly portrayed Van Vicker as dishonest, disrespectful and unprofessional in his dealings within the film industry.
The suit centres on allegations that Van Vicker failed to honour commitments relating to a movie project and did not return Lil Win’s calls. The video reportedly carried the headline, “LIL WIN BANS VAN VICKER FROM ACTING IN KUMASI!”
Van Vicker contends that the statements damaged his reputation and could affect his professional relationships with actors, producers and directors, particularly within Kumawood.
He also alleges that the publication could discourage industry players from working with him.
He further claims that concerns about his safety forced him to cancel planned business trips to Kumasi.
The actor is seeking GH¢10 million in exemplary damages, general damages for libel, a retraction and apology, as well as legal costs.
Van Vicker has also alleged that the publication was made maliciously to attract public attention to Lil Win and his movie project, 'Journey to Africa'.
