Five remand prisoners are still at large after six inmates escaped from the police cells at Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Police have reportedly rearrested one of the escapees in a suburb of Kumasi following a manhunt launched after the incident.
The inmates are suspected to have escaped through a hole they had dug, which reportedly led to the detached washrooms at the police station. They allegedly used the opening to get out of the cells before jumping off and fleeing.
Asante Akyem Central Municipal Chief Executive Dr Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo said the Municipal Security Council was taking steps to strengthen security at the facility.
He said plans were underway to fortify the walls of the police cells to prevent similar incidents.
Dr Aidoo also outlined longer-term measures, including the construction of a new police station and a possible increase in the number of police officers deployed to the area, particularly at night.
He added that the Municipal Security Council would improve lighting at the police station and install surveillance cameras to help monitor activities and prevent future escapes.
The police are continuing efforts to locate and arrest the five remaining escapees.
