Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has reacted to comments by singer Fameye that the Ghanaian music industry should not be reduced to discussions about only the country’s so-called “Top 3” artistes.
Fameye is understood to have called for broader attention to be given to other artistes within the Ghanaian music space, arguing that the industry has many talents whose work deserves recognition and media exposure.
His comments have now attracted a response from Shatta Wale, who said he found Fameye’s position amusing.
According to Shatta Wale, the difference between his own success and that of some other artistes is not simply media support, but the way he has built and maintained a relationship with his fans.
“I laughed when I heard Fameye saying the music industry is beyond the Top 3 artists in Ghana and that the media should also focus on the other artists,” Shatta Wale said.
The dancehall artiste explained that he deliberately presents himself as an ordinary Ghanaian rather than distancing himself from his supporters because of his celebrity status.
“You see, the difference is, someone like me, I brand myself differently. I don’t see myself as a superstar. I see myself like the ordinary Ghanaian and I move with my fans. I associate myself with them and we communicate always,” he stated.
Shatta Wale believes this close relationship has played an important role in building the strong following associated with his brand.
“This is why the people love me. This is why my fans always support me, because I keep it real with them, like a real friend,” he added.
He further argued that some artistes become less accessible after attaining a certain level of fame, which, in his view, can affect their relationship with their fan base.
“For others, they’ve moved away from the fans because they see themselves like superstars. They don’t make themselves available to their fans like I do. So how can you get a strong fanbase like mine?” Shatta Wale questioned.
He maintained that his approach to celebrity is different from that of artistes who create distance between themselves and their supporters.
“You people act like superstars towards your fans, but I don’t move like that. I see myself just like them, and this is why you think maybe I have media support more than you,” he said.
