Ghanaian actress and film producer Dzifa Agbetepey has called for calm and professionalism following comments attributed to veteran Nigerian actor Kanayo O. Kanayo concerning Ghanaian actors and their professional fees, which have sparked debate among practitioners and on social media.
In a statement, she said while she respects Kanayo's experience and contribution to African cinema, his recognition should not come at the expense of Ghanaian talent.
Madam Agbetepey stressed that acting is an art where every performer brings unique value, and that value should not be judged by nationality, noting that Ghana has produced exceptional actors who have excelled locally and internationally.
She cautioned against turning the discussion into a Ghana versus Nigeria rivalry, stating that concerns over fees and standards are legitimate industry issues that should be handled professionally.
"These are legitimate industry matters that should be addressed through proper negotiations, contracts and dialogue between producers, actors and their representatives. Professional negotiations should not result in statements that diminish an entire group of professionals,” she stressed.
Madam Agbetepey has called on the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), the Ghana Actors Guild and the National Film Authority (NFA) to provide leadership on the matter and use it as an opportunity to strengthen industry structures.
"I believe the three institutions should consider a joint or coordinated statement calling for calm, mutual respect and professionalism, while reaffirming the value and contribution of Ghanaian talent,” she added.
She urged her fellow Ghanaian actors and filmmakers to remain calm and avoid personal attacks, emphasizing the long history of collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria.
"Kanayo O. Kanayo can be a great Nigerian actor without Ghanaian actors being lesser actors. There is room for excellence from Ghana, Nigeria and across Africa. Our strongest response should be the quality of our work, our professionalism and the value we continue to bring to African cinema." She emphasised.
