Actress and social commentator Efia Odo has criticised Ghana’s two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for what she describes as years of failure to decisively tackle illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
In a post on X, Efia Odo said she finds it difficult to believe that political leaders are pretending to be fighting the menace which is destroying water bodies and forest reserves.
“There’s no way our leaders are blind to the damage galamsey is doing to our water bodies. In my view, both the NDC and NPP have failed us for years,” she wrote.
She criticised both parties for repeatedly making promises to fight galamsey during election campaigns but allegedly losing the same urgency after gaining political power.
“They campaign on promises to fight galamsey, yet once in power, the urgency disappears,” she stated.
Efia Odo subsequently questioned why the response from governments has not matched the scale of the environmental destruction.
“If they can see the destruction, why does their response never match the scale of the crisis?” she asked.
