Veteran broadcaster and celebrated Master of Ceremonies, Kafui Dey, has issued a strong caution to event MCs, urging them to reduce excessive talking and focus on elevating the event rather than themselves.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Ned Ankrah on DGN TV, Dey — who spent 17 years in sales before becoming a full‑time MC — said many MCs today derail programmes by over‑talking and self‑promotion.
“They talk too much. They need to reduce the talking. Bring that down,” he said. “They promote themselves. Promote the event. Make the speaker look good. Make the event look good. Take yourself out of the situation.”
According to him, the best MCs are almost invisible, creating a seamless experience without drawing attention. “I always smile when they do thank‑you’s and they thank everybody but they don’t thank the MC,” he noted. “The highest compliment is when after a banking event somebody asks, ‘Which bank do you work with?’ It means they’ve identified me with them so much that they think I’m one of them.”
He criticised the growing trend of MCs announcing their phone numbers on stage in an attempt to secure future gigs. “I’ve heard MCs giving their telephone numbers on stage — 024… You’re trying to secure the next job. No. Your excellence speaks for you,” he stressed. “At the end they will say, ‘Can I have your card?’ ‘Can I have your number?’ Don’t worry too much about the next week. If organisers are happy with you, they will book you for the next one.”
Instead, Dey encouraged MCs to request testimonials from organisers — ideally a one‑minute video stating their name, company and what they appreciated about the MC’s performance. “Don’t talk too much. Keep it down,” he emphasised.
Recounting his over 30‑year journey, Dey revealed that his MC career began by accident when his French boss, Mr. Louis Leroux, drafted him to host a company event — a moment that set him on the path to becoming one of Ghana’s most respected MCs.
