Dr Oduro blends music and medicine to promote healthier lifestyles

Ghanaian Hiplife pioneer Dr Oduro, known for timeless classics including “ABIBA” and “MEERI,” is combining his musical career with his professional background in pharmacy to promote health education and healthier lifestyles.

Decades after contributing to the development of Hiplife, Dr Oduro has returned to music with a renewed purpose shaped by his work as a Doctor of Pharmacy in the United States.

Through his music, he is seeking to raise awareness about preventive healthcare, healthy living and lifestyle-related health concerns.

His recent health-education single, “GISHIRI,” produced by legendary Ghanaian producer Morris Babyface, has attracted attention across the country. The song currently holds a Top 5 position on YFM’s Afrobeats Playlist on Apple Music and is ranked No. 8 on the Kessben FM Charts powered by DiiJay Nat Bubu.

Beyond its health-focused message, “GISHIRI” also reflects the musical qualities that established Dr Oduro as a notable figure in Ghana’s music industry. The song combines melodies, refined vocals and carefully crafted lyrics to deliver its message through an entertaining format.

Following “GISHIRI,” which highlights the health risks associated with excessive sodium consumption, Dr Oduro has released another health-conscious single titled “GYM.”

Produced by King Dee, “GYM” promotes physical activity and encourages listeners to adopt more active lifestyles. The Afrobeats-inspired track combines energetic rhythms, percussion and uplifting melodies to communicate the importance of exercise and physical wellbeing.

The song also touches on lifestyle-related health concerns, including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, presenting the issues in an accessible musical format.

Dr Oduro’s wife features on the chorus, adding a personal and family dimension to the project while complementing the song’s positive message.

The 2 releases form part of the broader vision of the Dr Oduro Foundation, which seeks to use popular music as a tool for promoting health literacy, behavioural change and preventive healthcare.

“Music was how I first connected with people,” Dr. Oduro notes. “Now as a clinician, music remains my most potent instrument — to educate, to influence, and to save lives.”

His current musical direction therefore represents more than a return to the creative industry. It reflects an effort to combine his experience in music and pharmacy to communicate important health messages to a wider audience.

With “GISHIRI” gaining attention and “GYM” extending the campaign to physical fitness and active living, Dr Oduro and his Foundation intend to take the music-driven health initiative to schools, health facilities, radio, digital platforms and audiences beyond Ghana.

From “ABIBA” and “MEERI” to “GISHIRI” and “GYM,” Dr Oduro’s musical journey continues to demonstrate how entertainment can also serve as a platform for health education, public awareness and social impact.
