Veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
News of the actor’s death emerged on Wednesday, September 16, marking the loss of one of Nigeria’s most respected figures in theatre, television and film.
Jacobs built a distinguished career that spanned the stage, British television, international cinema and Nollywood, where he became a familiar and influential figure.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs developed a passion for acting at a young age before travelling to the United Kingdom to pursue formal training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
He began his professional career in theatre and British television, with one of his earliest recorded stage appearances coming in 1972 when he played The Boy in ‘A Taste of Honey’ at the newly opened Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Throughout the 1970s, he featured in several British television productions, including The Goodies, Till Death Do Us Apart, Barlow at Large, The Venturers, Angels, The Tomorrow People and The Professionals.
His acting career also extended to international cinema, with appearances in films such as The Dogs of War, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend and Pirates.
After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became a prominent figure in the country’s emerging film industry and went on to appear in numerous Nollywood productions.
He earned particular recognition for his portrayals of authoritative, sophisticated and complex characters, establishing himself as one of the industry’s most respected veteran actors.
His contribution to the arts earned him several honours, including the Nigerian national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
He was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival in 2021 in recognition of his contribution to African cinema.
Jacobs was married to veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he tied the knot in 1989. The couple have two children and were widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s prominent celebrity couples.
