Former prisoner reveals how criminals use hearses, ambulances to smuggle weapons

A former prisoner, Dennis Kyeremateng, popularly known as Hero Commander, has alleged that criminals use hearses and ambulances to transport weapons and other illegal items without attracting suspicion.

The 27-year-old, who claims to be a police informant, made the allegation in an interview with KayB Media aired on September 15, 2026.

According to Kyeremateng, criminals sometimes use people who appear to be ordinary members of society to transport or conceal weapons intended for street crimes.

“On Fridays, don’t you see more ambulances on our roads? People go for their dead bodies, but are you aware that in some cases, it is not dead bodies being transported in the ambulance?” he said.

He alleged that family members attending funerals could also be involved in transporting weapons.

“The family head, the Abusuapanyin, sitting in the front seat is the dealer of the weapons. He dresses as though he is grieving, but the ambulance is transporting weapons and other illegal stuff,” he said.

Kyeremateng questioned whether security officers regularly stop hearses to establish what they are carrying.

“Have you ever seen the police stop a hearse to search it and find out which particular dead body it is carrying? This is how these things are smuggled,” he said.

He also alleged that some people who appear to be physically challenged and move around begging for money are used as informants by criminals.

According to him, some individuals may present themselves as people in need of financial assistance while allegedly gathering information for criminal groups.

His claims come against the backdrop of a previous operation in which the Ghana Police Service arrested a person for allegedly possessing and distributing cannabis using an ambulance.
