Accra named among world’s top 20 nightlife cities in 2026

Ghana's capital city, Accra has made the cut as one of the world's top 20 cities for nightlife in 2026, ranking 18th in a new global list by Time Out.

The Ghanaian capital was recognised for its vibrant bars and clubs, live music venues, entertainment spaces and popular nightlife districts.

The ranking was based on feedback from more than 24,000 locals, combined with assessments from Time Out's city editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists.

Cities were judged on factors including affordability, quality of nightlife, safety, community, diversity, excitement and how welcoming they are to residents and visitors.

Accra performed particularly well in affordability, community and hospitality. About 62 per cent of residents said going out in the city was affordable, while 75 per cent said it was easy to find a sense of community.

Another 65 per cent described the city as welcoming and friendly.

Time Out highlighted Osu as one of Accra's major nightlife centres, while East Legon continues to grow as another popular destination for evening entertainment.

The city's nightlife also goes beyond mainstream Afrobeats, with electronic music, alté, R&B and other emerging music scenes adding variety to Accra's after-dark culture.

Accra was one of only two African cities to make the global top 20, with Johannesburg ranking seventh and emerging as Africa's highest entry.

The global list was topped by Bangkok, followed by Berlin and Melbourne.

Accra's 18th-place ranking further highlights the Ghanaian capital's growing reputation as a major destination for music, culture and nightlife.
