MON, 19 OCT 2026

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a consignment of 1,065 compressed parcels of suspected cannabis at Torve, near Akatsi in the Volta Region.

The seizure was made by the Preventive Monitoring Unit (PMU) of the Aflao Sector Command at about 9:35 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026, following intelligence about a black Lexus vehicle suspected to be transporting illicit substances.

According to the Customs Division, the driver attempted to evade the officers but abandoned the vehicle after it developed a mechanical fault.

A search of the vehicle subsequently led to the discovery of the 1,065 compressed parcels, weighing 560.4 kilograms in total.

The consignment has an estimated street value of GH¢11.2 million.

Officers also retrieved a Ghana Card bearing the name Kunuhor Gidsway from the vehicle, which was found to be carrying falsified registration plates.

The suspected cannabis was jointly examined and authenticated by personnel from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Defence Intelligence, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and National Security.

The seized substances and the vehicle have since been handed over to NACOC for further investigations.

Customs has recommended efforts to trace and arrest the suspect who fled the scene, as well as verification of the Ghana Card through the National Identification Authority.

It has also recommended laboratory testing of the seized substances and the strengthening of intelligence networks to help disrupt similar drug trafficking attempts.

The Sector Commander for Aflao Collection, Emmanuel Reginald Duh, described the seizure as a “significant disruption to the illegal drug trade in the region”.

He reaffirmed the Customs Division’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s borders from the movement of contraband.
