Abeka Manye, Naa Ayeley Osongor II, has expressed her dissatisfaction with how parents, particularly Ga mothers, have adopted the use of English language in their homes, neglecting the mother tongue in recent times.
Speaking in an interview with BEATWAVES on the sidelines of the Abeka Homowo celebration, Naa Ayeley Osongor II vowed to embark on a massive campaign on the need to incorporate the Ga language in communication in the home, stressing that the language risks becoming extinct.
“Nowadays, it is very disturbing to see our Ga women speaking English language with their children even in the house, which to me is very disturbing. As mothers, educating our children using our indigenous Ga language will help us preserve our culture and tradition.
“In my capacity as the Abeka Manye and a mother, I entreat our beautiful Ga women to speak the language with our children. They are the future,” she stated.
Naa Ayeley Osongor II also called on the Ministry of Education and other Ga leaders in authority to reintroduce the compulsory Ga language in schools, saying, “One of the things I will be championing is the reintroduction of compulsory Ga languages in our schools. Because if we have schools on the Ga land, it is just proper that its languages are also taught.”
