Okyeame Kwame Turns TGMA Red Carpet Into Powerful Anti‑Galamsey Protest

Renowned musician and “Rap Dacta” Okyeame Kwame transformed the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) red carpet into a striking stage for environmental activism, using his appearance to spotlight the destructive impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Draped in shimmering gold from head to toe and wielding a gold‑plated sword, the artiste’s regal look carried a deeper, somber message. He was flanked by two bodybuilders portraying victims of the physical and environmental “cancers” caused by galamsey—creating a vivid contrast between Ghana’s natural wealth and the devastation tied to its exploitation.

Speaking to host Giovanni Caleb, Okyeame Kwame explained that the symbolism was intentional.

“I wanted to look like gold to remind Ghanaians that while gold glitters, galamsey destroys our rivers, our rocks, our air, and our nature,” he said.

He stressed that the fight against environmental degradation is a shared national duty.

“If we glitter like this once every year and forget that it is not the responsibility of the NPP or NDC, but the collective responsibility of all Ghanaians to stop this galamsey cancer, then we have failed,” he added.

Long celebrated as an “Artivist,” Okyeame Kwame has consistently used his platform to champion social and environmental causes. His bold TGMA appearance momentarily shifted the night’s focus from entertainment to advocacy, reinforcing the power of art to drive national reflection and change.

The musician is currently promoting his new single, “Clap,” which encourages communal support and the celebration of others’ achievements.
