TV3 Network Limited stamped its authority as the veritable home of reality television shows in Ghana when, in 2010, it premiered a novel TV show called "Talented Kidz". The station's management had previously launched reality TV shows, viz. Mentor, Looking for Love, Ghana's Most Beautiful (GMB), Dance Fever, Hottest Host, Bands Alive, and Gang Starz, and decided to create one for children (kids) in the country as well.
What they sought to do with this children's TV format was to platform kids who have the innate abilities, skills, and talent to sing/rap, dance, recite poems, play musical instruments, et cetera; hence the name "Talented Kidz" (with 'kids' stylised as "kidz"). Over the years, the show has birthed child stars such as DJ Switch (the Ghanaian DJ, not the Nigerian), Nakeeyat the Poet, Abigail (also of "Britain's Got Talent" fame), and a host of others.
As expected, it returned to TV3 screens this year, with new contestants also given a platform to showcase their abilities, skills, and talents, just as those before them. At the grand finale held last Sunday, April 26, at the National Theatre, the contestant named Queen Dessa (ostensibly the oldest among the finalists) walked away with the bragging rights of being the show's season 17 winner.

Since last Sunday, however, a section of the viewing public has expressed deep misgivings about the winner, and if truly she is a "kid" as implied by the show's title, and blah blah blah. This concern probably stems from former Talented Kidz contestant and actor/comedian, Enoch Darko a.k.a. What-a-bombshell's admission that he falsified his age to participate in season 2 of the show in 2011. This possibly has fueled the ongoing debate about the age of this season's winner and the need for stricter verification by the organisers.
But could it be that Queen Dessa is indeed a kid, but just does not look her age? Be that as it may, whether the young singer will glitter or wither on the music scene would not depend on age, but on factors such as originality and how her management team manages her career.
Like the previous editions, this year's Talented Kidz delighted the ears and eyes of viewers, albeit 'new' judge Belinda Boadu (TV3 presenter Giovani's wife) really 'tormented' the kids with her foreign accent. Once again, Oreilia and Maria proved why youngsters ought to be the ones presenting the show and not adults, as was the case during its nascent stages when Enyonam Badohu and, later, Miriam Osei Agyemang hosted it.
