Male “wife” roles in comedy and stage plays are not new, but this particular casting choice has sparked conversations among fans of the iconic Ghanaian stage play “I Told You So”.
Originally produced by the late legendary Lord Bob Cole and now revived by Fiifi Coleman Productions, the play features a star-studded ensemble including legendary music icon Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, Clemento Suarez, Mr. Beautiful, Mynna Otoo, Deaconess Abokuma, Araba Dansowa, Fred Amugi, and many more.
In the production, Deaconess Abokuma, a male content creator known for portraying female characters in his comedy and social media skits, takes on the role of a wife. This decision caught the attention of audiences, leading many to wonder about the reasoning behind it.
Producer Fifi Coleman, speaking to Bruna Franka on the Keteke Drive Show on Spice 91.9 FM, explained the rationale: “Male actors portraying female roles in stage plays or comedies is a long-standing tradition. But beyond that, Deaconess Abokuma is extremely talented and has the numbers. His large social media following attracts younger audiences, including Gen Z and online communities. His presence ensures the play reaches both theatre enthusiasts and digital-savvy viewers.”
After a successful premiere in Accra, “I Told You So” is now touring across Ghana. Audiences in Takoradi can catch the performance on March 21, 2026, at Akroma Plaza, promising an evening of humor, drama, and unforgettable entertainment.
With a combination of legendary actors, veteran performers, and social media influencers, “I Told You So” represents a modern wave of Ghanaian theatre blending traditional storytelling with contemporary digital influence to captivate audiences across generations.
