A female prison officer has been sentenced to a year in jail after police uncovered over 4,000 flirtatious messages exchanged between her and an inmate at HMP Five Wells, a high-security prison in Northamptonshire.

The officer, 29-year-old Toni Cole, was convicted of misconduct in public office after investigators found 4,369 texts that crossed professional boundaries, exposing a secret relationship that defied the ethical standards of her role.

Cole’s case is one of several recent incidents raising concerns about inappropriate relationships between prison staff and inmates.

Just weeks before her sentencing, another officer, 42-year-old Dawn MacCormack, was jailed for 27 months after engaging in a similar relationship with an inmate at HMP The Mount.

Their interactions, which included more than 4,500 texts and a topless massage caught on surveillance cameras, highlighted the growing issue of prison officers abusing their positions of power.

These cases have sparked debate about the vulnerabilities within the prison system, where unauthorized relationships can lead to serious breaches in security.

Such misconduct raises concerns about smuggled contraband, preferential treatment for certain inmates, and even threats to institutional control.

Police have since emphasized the need for stricter monitoring and disciplinary action to prevent further cases of unprofessional behavior behind bars.
