MAWUSE APPEA, a student of the University of Ghana, Legon last Friday beat 22 other beautiful ladies to annex this year's Miss Ghana crown.

After proving herself by displaying remarkable acumen, inner beauty, good stage manners and articulacy at the final stages of the Miss Ghana event, which was held live at the National Theater in Accra, the judges had no other choice than to give her the coveted title.

It was not obvious from the beginning as to which of the 22 ladies who mounted the stage that night could wear the crown.

However when the best ten were selected, it become obvious, as even the crowd's cheering suggested so. The 22-year-old scored more points with the level of intelligence she exhibited in answering her questions, something which endeared her to the judges, who aptly declared her Miss Ghana 2008.

Huberta Naa Oyoe Quartey, another 22-year-old lady of the University of Ghana Medical School emerged the 1st runner up while 19 -year-old Shirley Nwangere, a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was the second runner-up.

As part of the prize packages, Mawuse drove home a brand new Hyundai Accent saloon car worth $17,000 and state-of-the-art home appliances, courtesy Somovision, one of the major sponsors of the show.

The rest included GH¢2,500 cash prize, a wardrobe, a year's free make-up and therapy, as well as participation in the Miss World 2009 pageant. Huberta received GH¢5,000, a set of modern living room furniture and home appliances while Shirley received GH¢3,000 cash prize, ATL fabrics and home appliances.

The event attracted performances from NAKOREX, the erstwhile sensational highlife group that was rejuvenated purposely for the pageant.

The three former members of the group - Amandzeba Nat Brew, Akosua Adjepong and Rex Omar - broke up about a decade ago to pursue individual musical careers.

There were also elating performances from the duos 5five and 4X4 as well as the 'Abodam' crooner, Kwaw Kese.
