Stephen Appiah, a former skipper for the Black Stars has recounted how he was named as the captain of the senior national team.
Appiah led the Ghana national team from 2002 to 2010 before hanging his boots internationally.
He further made history as the first captain to lead the Black Stars to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 2006.
According to the Juventus legend, an international friendly match against Slovenia on 17 May 2002 paved way for him to become the captain of the Black Stars.
"It was a friendly game against Slovenia, it was launch time and we were preparing for the game when the coach then (Milan Živadinović) named me as the captain," the former Fenerbahçe man told GTV.
"Olele (Richard Kingston) was sitting next to me so I raised my hand and told the Coach "Olele" is here and he was the senior player in the team so I think he should be the captain.
"Whiles I was talking, Olele just tapped me on the shoulder and told me, Stephen, you will lead us."
The former Hearts of Oak midfielder has been described as one of the most influential captains to have ever led the Ghana national team.
Appiah also made history in 1995 when the Black Starlets won the FIFA U17 World Cup for the second time in Ecuador.
Appiah retired from the game in 2015.
