The walls and waterproofing structures of the Accra and Kumasi Sports Stadiums are currently undergoing rehabilitation as part of efforts to raise the two venues to international status in readiness for the Africa Nations Cup Finals slated for January 22 to February 13, 2000.
It is being carried out by Dygate Ghana Limited and Adrho Limited, and will cost about 700 million cedis.
A source at the Ministry of Youth and Sports said in Accra on Monday that Dygate will be in charge of the Accra Sports Stadium while Adrho will handle the Kumasi Stadium.
It said the completion of the major cracks on the centreline of the Grand Stands at the Kumasi Sports Stadium and the Upper Terrace of the Accra Stadium would make the concrete slaps strong enough for the plastic seats to be fixed.
Work at the Accra Stadium will cost 215,135,100 cedis while that of Kumasi Stadium will be 464,947,543 cedis.
The source said repairs on cracks in Accra Stadium walls will cover an area of 1200 metres square and 60 metres of "expansion and joints".
An area of 1900 metres square of cracks, 450 metres of hairline cracks and 112 metres of "expansion joints" will be treated at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
It said that only 1,100 seats were fixed at the Kumasi Stadium last April for the CAF under-20 soccer tournament as against over 10,000 at the Accra Stadium, adding that there is need to send more to Kumasi.
