The sensational Saba brothers who thrilled Ghana Football in the late 1990s and early 2000 have lost their father, Mr. Daniel Michael Nii Saban Saba aka “Makooko”. He was 82 years old.

According to funeral arrangements, he will be taken from the morgue on January 26, 2017 for Wake Keeping at his Mamprobi residence and buried on January 27, 2017 at the Osu Cemetry in Accra.

Daniel Saba who was a keen sports lover and one time footballer gave birth to eleven children (9 boys and 2 girls) who were all talented footballers, including Robert and Christian who played to the highest professional level.

They featured for Accra Hearts of Oak and the national teams before moving outside to play in Europe and America respectively.

Christian Saba who spoke to Yours Truly on Saturday night from his base in Germany revealed that his father has also contributed to Ghana Sports and deserves a fitting burial.

He called on all Accra Hearts of Oak fans and supporters of Bayern Munich in Ghana to help him mourn and bury his father.

According to Chris Saba who has been on the quite for some time, he is very happy working in Germany as an Assistant Coach at the Bayern Munich Youth U16 side and hopes to become a bigger coach in future as he is learning a lot as well as imparting massively.

He revealed his contribution to Ghana Football playing at the World Under 17 in Ecuador and winning the World Under 17 Cup, before featuring at the Atlanta Olympic Games in the USA.

Popularly known as Alonzo, he noted that not playing at the main seniors FIFA World Cup is one of his regrets as he recollects Ghana playing against Zimbabwe where the Black Stars were robbed, after he had scored the first goal and in the dying minutes of the game the referee awarded a doubtful penalty against him and Ghana when the ball hit his stomach.

“In fact it was my saddest day as a footballer, and you can not believe the see stars like Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah and myself weeping after the match” he said.

Meanwhile, Christian Saba is also on record to be the longest serving African player at a European club. He served Munich for 16 years but could not break through the first team due to injury and ill luck, though he was a great talent.

Saba wished the current Black Stars well and urged them to go all out to win the next African Cup in Gabon 2017.
