Accra, April 26, GNA-Obuasi Goldfields Sporting Club Limited has undergone transition as the new owners of the club, Anglogold Ashanti have accordingly announced a change in their name.

Goldfields are now to be known as AshantiGold Sporting Club Limited when they officially gained their new statues on Friday, April 16 after the office of the Registrar General's Department had approved the proposed change of name as requested by the new owners. By the change, the Abuakesie lads will be playing under the new name when this year's Kinapharma Zonal Premier League commences on Sunday, May 2 at all the league centres.

AshantiGold are scheduled to trek to the Sunyani Coronation to lock horns with Tano Bofoakwa.

Goldfields FC are remembered for emerging as the first Ghanaian club to reach the finals of the Confederation of African Football Champions League final in 1997.

The club was at the centre of controversies after 12 points were deducted from their build-up of the 2003 Premier League by the Player Status Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for fielding an unqualified player in the person of Valentine Atem, a Cameroonian import.

Out of the camp of the Obuasi club last year emerged the teenage joint-goal king, Shaibu Yakubu who is also a regular member of the national U-23 soccer team, the Black Meteors.
