Substitute Vedat Muriqi scored a late header as Fenerbahce twice came from behind to secure a 3-2 victory and ensure Liverpool’s perfect start to the UEFA Champions League came to a disappointing end in Istanbul.
Andoni Iraola’s team were looking to secure a fourth straight victory in the League Phase but were outfought in the Turkish capital as ex-Red Dirk Kuyt masterminded a famous win as caretaker boss of the Yellow Canaries.
The Merseysiders deservedly took the lead when Trey Nyoni’s deflected volley from the edge of the area saw the 19-year-old net his first senior goal.
Fenerbahce came storming back and levelled just four minutes later when Mason Greenwood’s deflected free kick deceived Alisson.
Liverpool turned to a stacked bench with substitutes Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak combining for the latter to restore the visitors’ lead with a header on 69 minutes.
However, a mix-up at the back allowed Englishman Archie Brown to stab home at the far post soon after before Muriqi rose above everyone in a packed area to guide a header into the far corner 11 minutes from time.
The result leaves Liverpool with nine points from four outings. Fenerbahce are four points further back.
Liverpool will now aim to bounce back from back-to-back defeats in all competitions when they visit Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
