Hearts of Oak Interim Management Committee (IMC) Lead Administrator Vincent Sowah Odotei has criticised the quality of entertainment in the Ghana Premier League, saying it is a major reason behind the competition's persistently low stadium attendance.
The Ghanaian top flight has struggled to attract sizeable crowds over the years, with poor attendance affecting the revenue generated by clubs.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Odotei argued that the league must improve its entertainment value to bring supporters back to the stadiums.
He believes football is not simply about the competition on the pitch but also about the excitement, drama and personalities that attract fans.
“Our football is not fit for purpose. Our football is not entertaining. In football, we’re not in the business of football; we’re in the entertainment business through it.
“Football is a drama. You need actors, you need stars that people will want to come and watch,” he said.
Odotei pointed to former Hearts of Oak players Shamo Quaye and Ablade Kumah as examples of footballers whose popularity attracted supporters from their communities to watch the club.
He also referenced former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah and Anas Seidu, stressing that players with strong community connections can help build a loyal following for their clubs.
“People came to watch Hearts of Oak because of Shamo Quaye and Ablade Kumah. They came from Tema, their community. You go to Newtown, Anas Seidu. You go to Mamprobi, Stephen Appiah and co. That’s where they come from.
“We don’t have that in our football. We are not providing the entertainment, so naturally, people will go to leagues that provide entertainment,” he added.
His comments highlight the growing concerns surrounding the Ghana Premier League's appeal, with clubs continuing to face challenges in attracting supporters and generating revenue from matchday activities.
With Matchday Nine completed over the weekend, attention now shifts to Matchday 10, which is scheduled to take place at various venues across the country this weekend.
