The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has visited the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo as part of a study tour of Japan aimed at exploring how advanced research and emerging technologies can be applied to address practical development challenges.
The visit forms part of Bawumia’s engagements with Japanese academic institutions, technology companies and research organisations, with a focus on understanding the country’s application of artificial intelligence (AI), satellite technology and innovation to improve various sectors of the economy.

In a Facebook post, Dr Bawumia said his visit to the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory provided an opportunity to learn about ongoing research in deep learning and generative artificial intelligence, particularly how these technologies are being deployed to solve real-world problems.
The laboratory, which is internationally recognised for its work in artificial intelligence, focuses on developing technologies with applications across critical sectors, including healthcare, education, manufacturing and agriculture.

Bawumia said the engagement offered valuable insights into how cutting-edge research could be translated into practical solutions capable of improving productivity and service delivery.
He noted that artificial intelligence has significant potential to transform different aspects of national development when effectively integrated into key sectors of the economy.
The NPP flagbearer also held discussions with Japanese space technology institutions and private-sector companies as part of efforts to understand how satellite data and space-based technologies are being used to address environmental and agricultural challenges.

The discussions focused on the application of satellite technology in monitoring and responding to issues such as flooding, deforestation, drought stress and crop conditions.
Among the institutions and companies involved in the engagements were Axelspace, Hanibashi and Cross U, which are associated with Japan’s growing space technology and innovation ecosystem.
